The Emergency Assistance Program for Scientists and Artists in Exile (PAUSE) was created on January 16, 2017. Managed by the Collège de France, the program aims to facilitate the reception of researchers, scientists, intellectuals, and artists from countries where political situations endanger their work and families. Its purpose is to protect them and their families, ensure the continuity of their work, and support their integration both professionally and personally.

The program provides grants to French institutions, schools, and research organizations that wish to host at-risk researchers, co-financing up to 60% of these hosting projects for scientists in exile and in emergency situations.

Since 2021, the program has also supported artists and artist-teachers facing danger in their home countries.


 

Since its creation, PAUSE has successfully funded over 300 researchers, some of whom have been able to benefit from a second year of support. Among them is Abdul Majeed AL IZERI, a Yemeni national and researcher at the Blaise-Pascal Mathematics Laboratory, whose testimony you can find:



 

Significant figures since the creation of the program in 2017:
  • 621 awardees welcomed, including 556 scientists and 65 artists.
  • 177 beneficiaries of the Ukraine Emergency Solidarity Fund, including 132 scientists and 45 artists (of Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian nationality).
  • 130 host institutions.
  • 43 countries of origin.
