This winter school is addressed to Master��s and PhD students and PostDoc researchers who would like to learn about interdisciplinary research on the health hazards of volcanic emissions. The proposed lectures and practicals will be at the interface between : volcanology, geochemistry, petrology, atmospheric sciences, biology, health sciences and social sciences.

The school aims to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of the evaluation of the health hazards in volcanic contexts. We will cover aspects of observation, measurement, analysis and modelling of volcanic phenomena and products, as well as the assessment of health impacts at the population scale.

Monday 12 January: Introduction to the health hazards from volcanic eruptions and population-based studies

Morning : 3h of lectures

Presentation of the speakers.
General introduction on the health effects of volcanic activity.
Human health in volcanic environments: lessons from epidemiological studies.
Psychology of disasters and human behaviour in front of health risks: socio-psychological studies in volcanic environments.

Afternoon : 3h of practicals

Presentation of the participants (live survey and/or games).
Practicals on existing epidemiological and socio-psychological data.
Choice of epidemiological approaches. Introduction to psychosocial concepts and behavioural science. Statistical data processing with R. Critical analyses of the results.

Tuesday 13 January: Gas emissions

Morning: 3h of lectures

Radioactivity of volcanic emissions and associated health effects.
Characterization of gas emissions (ground and plumes) and associated health effects.
In vitro approaches for the evaluation of the biological reactivity of gases.

Afternoon: 3h of practicals

Demonstration of various gas sampling and measurement techniques (Popcorn, multigas, accumulation chamber) in the field in Cha?ne des Puys if the weather conditions allow it.

Wednesday 14 January: Visit of the Lempt��gy volcano and health response crisis management exercise
Morning: Visit of Lemptegy volcano
Meal at Lemptegy
Afternoon: Health response crisis management exercise.

Thursday 15 January: Particle emissions and biological reactivity

Morning: 3h of lectures

Physicochemical characterisation of particle emissions.
In-vivo and isotope metallomics approach for understanding the impact of volcanic products on biological systems.
Pathophysiology of lung aggression.

Afternoon : 3h of practicals

The possible practicals: (1) SEM analyses at the grain scale of volcanic emissions, (2) preparation for isotopic analyses applied to biological samples by MC-ICP-MS, (3) mineralogical analysis by Raman spectroscopy, (4) ash leaching, (5) isolation of respirable ash samples by aerodynamic separation.

Friday 16 January: Exposure to volcanic emissions

Morning: 3 h of lectures

Analyses of volcanic deposits for the characterisation of particle dispersion in volcanic emissions.
Air quality in volcanic environments.
Numerical modelling for gas dispersion assessments.

Afternoon: 3h of lectures

Development of a human exposure index to volcanic emissions using GIS methods.
Numerical modelling using a case study example (e.g., La Palma, Soufri��re Guadeloupe)
Time series analyses of air quality and comparison to volcanological data using a case study example.

Welcoming Better to Attract More International Students

The "Bienvenue en France" label is part of measures launched by the French government in 2019 to enhance France's attractiveness, with the goal of welcoming 500,000 international students by 2027, compared to 325,000 today. In this context, the quality of the welcome extended to international audiences is a critical issue, and its quality level is now guaranteed through the awarding of this label. Specifically, the evaluation conducted by Campus France focuses on five key areas:

The quality and accessibility of information
The quality and accessibility of reception services
Support and preparation for academic programs
Housing and quality of campus life
The quality of socio-professional integration and post-graduation follow-up.

A rewarded proactive welcome policy

Obtaining this label is a recognition of the university's commitment, along with its territorial partners, to welcoming the 5,110 international students at UCA. This is an important element for promoting and enhancing the international visibility of our different university campuses, all of which are involved in various initiatives, including:

Setting up a one-stop shop to welcome international students, in partnership with CROUS, the city of Clermont-Ferrand and the Puy-de-D?me prefecture.
The organization of welcome and integration events throughout the year
A sponsorship program to help international students integrate into local and university life.

With this accreditation, Clermont Auvergne University will benefit from communications that will be relayed on all Campus France agency media and to the network of diplomatic posts.

A commitment to quality

UCA's accreditation is an important and encouraging step that should enable the institution to initiate a process of reflection aimed at structuring a long-term global hospitality strategy. To this end, several initiatives have already been launched:

If you must go in France or abroad

STUDIES AND INTERSHIPS : STUDENTS

? Clusters ? in France : It is recommended to follow local advice and reduce social activities and going out of the cluster unless absolutely necessary.
China : All mobilities are cancelled until the end of the semester.
Singapor & South Korea : These places are labelled ? orange zones ? by the Ministry : no mobilities allowed.
Japan & North Italy : These countries are labelled ? green zones ? but mobilities are postponed until further indication
Other countries : It is recommended to ? postpone mobilities except for proven needs ?. Compulsory studies and internships abroad are considered as proven needs for our students and departures don��t have to be postponed.

Mobility can be maintained (particularly if it results in the validation of a diploma) as long as it conforms to the local sanitary advice. If you are back from a cluster abroad

The confinement at home for 14 days is cancelled since step 2.

However, please follow the instruction :

wash your hand regularly
avoid any contacts
watch your fever two times a day
watch any symptoms related to the infection (coughing, difficulty to breathe��)
avoid any contact with any fragile people (pregnant woman, old people, regularly-ill people��)
avoid any places where fragile people are (hospitals, nursing homes, old people facilities��)
avoid unnecessary outings (gathering, restaurants, theaters��)
use disposable tissus
avoid smoking

In case some symptoms appear (fever �� 38.5��)

contact the SAMU Center (15), listing the symptons and any former stay in the clusters
do not go directly to the doctor��s or to the emergencies (not to contaminate others)
wear a mask only if you are ill.

Daily life in France

The requirements are the same as for the influenza: wash your hands regularly, use disposable tissus, cough in your elbow, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze, avoid handshakes and hugs, wash regularly any items that you touch (door handles and phones) and take this opportunity to stop smoking.
Then, if you are ill (cough, fever), avoid any contacts, stay at home and wear a face mask if you meet a doctor.
